These events are bound to be a good time. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to make it to each one, so please feel free to drop a comment on what goodies you may have gotten your hands onto at the Jeffersonville and Bloomington events. Cheers!

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Timelapse

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company released a timelapse video of the open tank fermentation process used to make their famous Bigfoot Barleywine. For those of you who have never seen a high gravity beer fermentation this may seem pretty chaotic. The stainless steel vessels are cleaned, sanitized, then filled with cooled wort on which the yeast is pitched. The bubbly foam you see moving around on top/spilling over the side is referred to as the krausen. This is yeast and wort proteins, along with unfermentables and hop resins. It usually sticks to the side of the fermenter, and in this case spills over the sides of the vessel. Pretty amazing to see this process in timelapse! Great video Sierra Nevada!

Woman Stabs Husband With Ceramic Squirrel For Not Bringing Home Beer

helen_ann_williamsSo this just happened… A South Carolina woman was arrested for smashing a ceramic squirrel over her husband’s head and then stabbing him in the chest with it after finding out he didn’t bring home any beer from the store early Christmas morning. Helen Ann Williams is now in county jail with a $10,000 bond. Williams told police that her husband “fell” and cut himself 🙂 Here’s a link to the story. I wonder what beer she wanted? Either way, hopefully your holiday season didn’t include getting stabbed by a ceramic animal. Cheers!

Table of organic compounds and their smells

Ever pop the top on a bottle of homebrew and catch a whiff of something familiar? With this handy chart you may just be able to pinpoint that aroma based on the organic compound that causes it. Let’s just hope you never end up with a Hexanoic Acid smell in your brew.

As an added bonus, here is a chart that shows some of the common esters in homebrew!
