Stout Bout Homebrew Competition

Great Fermentations on November 17th
From 12-5pm

• All entries need to fall within Category 13 – Stout Ale BJCP Guidelines for style.
• The first 15 people to register their brews using the Homebrew Competition Form are guaranteed a seat in the competition.
• 2 bombers of homebrew are required per entry. 1 bomber goes towards the tasting, and one is set aside for “the pot.” You can also enter four 12oz bottles, but 2 will go to the pot.
• We’ll label your entry at the start of the tasting (I’ll have plenty of sheets available when we start), but please make sure your brew is refrigerated.
• This tasting is blind, and each person who enters also gets to taste/judge each entry. The winner at the end of the tasting gets to take home the pot plus prizes!
What makes this event unique is that each participant is also a judge! All beers will be served randomly, and rated on a scale of 1-10. The entry with the highest average score receives a gift card to Great Fermentations, a special blog post on BIMP, and takes home one of every homebrew entered.

Brown Ales Tasting is Approaching Quickly

There’s still time to reserve your spot for the Brown Ales tasting coming up on Saturday. We’ll be grilling out, sampling brews, and enjoying a nice fire out at The BLVD apartment complex in Whitestown. There are some great entries in at the moment, but there is still room for plenty more beers. I’m planning on grilling out some burgers, but I’ll also have grilled vegetables for you herbivores. Keep your eyes peeled for the grills and fire pit on your right, just North of 6190 Central Blvd. Please make sure to Request a Brew for this event. This way we can make sure we don’t have any duplicate entries. As always, bring a 6 pack of your requested brew (3 bombers or a growler is also ok as long as you bring a brew to throw into the pot). You can find the full BJCP description of American Brown Ales and English Brown ales on the BJCP website. I’m planning the tasting for Saturday August 11th at 5pm. One Week Until Scottish Fest

There’s only one week left to register for our tasting next Saturday. This one is definitely one not to miss. BJCP Guidelines (Category 9 – Scottish and Irish Ales) describe Scottish Ales as primarily malty with low to moderate hop bitterness, and a low to medium body. The ABV will vary from 3-10% based on the type of ale brewed, and can vary in color from light copper to deep amber. Scottish Ales are categorized in a rather interesting way. Beers were classified by their price in schillings, with the stronger beers being more expensive (Strong Scotch Ale or “Wee Heavy” 90/-) and lighter beers being less expensive (Scottish Light 60/-). Here is a list of higher rated suggested brews that fit the style and may give you the edge to win the round:

Belhaven Wee Heavy
Belhaven 80 +/- Scottish Ale
Belhaven McCallum’s Stout Scottish Ale
Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale
Tyranena Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale
Bluegrass Brewing Co. Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale
Black Swan Scottish Ale
Sun King Wee Mac Scottish Ale
Belhaven Premium Scottish Export
Belhaven St. Andrew’s Ale

As you can see, Belhaven Brewery has numerous beers to choose from. My suggestion would be to hit up Kahn’s and see what they have available. I know for a fact that Sun King always has Wee Mac on tap if you’re into the $5 Friday scene 🙂 Looking forward to the 30th. Scottish Fest will be taking place at The Blvd Apartments. I’ll be sending formal invites with directions soon.

Registration Window Open For Indiana Brewer’s Cup

Registration has begun for the Indiana Brewer’s Cup at the State Fair. Three bottles per entry will need to be submitted to Sun King Brewery between now and June 22nd along with a $10 entry fee which can be submitted here. Each bottle will need to have a completed bottle ID form affixed to it with a rubber band. Once submitted, each exhibitor will receive two tickets to the Brewers’ Cup Award Reception on Saturday, July 7 at 6:00 pm on the Indiana State Fairgrounds where the results will be announced. Make sure that your bottles are not labeled or caps marked in any way as it may disqualify your entry. For those of you just now bottling, you should still have more than enough time for your entries to condition. Best of luck!

Upland UpCup 2012 Results

UpCup was AWESOME! I’m definitely entering again next year. There were 80+ entries in total, 12 of which were selected for best in show. The event was catered with food from the restaurant, there were multiple brewery tours with Caleb, and of course a great selection of Upland brews. Congrats to Andrew from the Foam Blowers of Indiana for a well deserved win.

Great Fermentations In-Store Homebrew Competition

Great Fermentations will be hosting an in-store IPA competition using their VIPA recipe as the base for the grain bill. This should be a pretty interesting competition. Hop additions and yeast are completely up to the brewer, however Simcoe and Galaxy are off the table due to the hop shortage. The winner receives a $50 Great Fermentations gift card, along with being mentioned on the updated VIPA IPA recipe kit. The winner also gets to brew a batch at Great Fermentations for a Friday Night Club. Entries (2 bottles) are due June 15th and the winner will be announced June 22nd. Click here for a complete listing of the rules. I’ve listed the recipe below:
