Stout Bout 2012!

Welcome to Stout Bout! Hello fellow BIMPers. I’ve just confirmed that next month’s tasting will be held at Nate and Krista Boles’ on March 24th @7pm. There is one catch… Only the first 15 people to “Request a Brew” on the website will be allowed participate in this tasting. This does not mean you are not invited, it only means that a maximum of 15 people will be able to enter their beer for the tasting. That said, this month’s tasting will be much easier to choose a beer! All stouts are game. Oatmeal Stouts, Russian Imperial Stouts, Milk Stouts, Java Stouts, or just your classic Dry Stout. My apologies in advance, as Guinness Original Stout will be used as the sample beer. Stout ales are known for their roasty/chocolate malt flavor, medium to heavy body, and wonderful black color. There are some great suggestions for Stout ales on beeradvocate.com and ratebeer.com. The floodgates are open. I’ll be accepting requests from this point forward. First 15 to request their brew guarantee a spot in the tasting.  And remember, I like my Stouts like I like my coffee… Black!

Here’s the current list of registered beer:

Guinness Original Stout – Erik Howell (sample)
Rainbow In The Dark American Stout (homebrew) – Erik Howell
North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout – Krista Boles
Great Divide Yeti Russian Imperial Stout – Nate Boles
Hoppin’ Frog B.O.R.I.S The Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout – Brian Paul

Amber Tasting Results!

It took a little bit of time to decipher the cryptic symbols, cave drawings, and vauge descriptions of each brew. After about 20 minutes of deliberation, we had a winner 🙂

Amber Armageddon ended up having a huge turnout. 22 registered beers (including Carl’s homebrew), donkey calls, and beekeepers all made their appearance. I submit for the approval of the midnight society two lists. The first one is in the order of each beer as they were served, and the second is the list from best to worst beers submitted with corresponding scores. Thanks again to Isaac and Stef for hosting. We’ll see you next month for Stouts!

Untappd Beer Review App

This app is awesome! It’s a great way to rate beer on the go. Plus it has some really unique features. Looking for a specific brew? Untappd allows you to tag where you bought each beer you enter, which in turn allows others using the app to track down beer they are looking for. You earn badges, like in Foursquare, for unlocking certain beer related achievements. I found some pretty interesting beers using this app. For example, I love Three Floyds Robert the Bruce Scottish Ale, but I had no idea that the brewery made a Bourbon Barrel Aged Robert the Bruce with cherries. You can even add beers your friends suggest to a wishlist. It’s definitely worth checking out.

Amber Style Tasting Confirmed!

Hello fellow BIMPers. I’ve just confirmed the date for next month’s tasting! We’ll be holding our “Amber Armageddon” event at Isaac and Stef’s House on February 25th at 7pm. So what is an Amber beer? Amber beer can be either an Ale or a Lager. From what I could find the style is a spinoff of the traditional Pale ale. Amber Ales are generally amber to red in color, have a tones of caramel and malt, a medium to heavy body, and moderate hoppy flavor. Amber beer can also come as a lager. As with any lager, you can expect less fruity flavors derived from the yeast at higher temperatures. Lagers will also have a more malty/grain flavor than ales. If you are at a loss for what to bring PLEASE MAKE SURE THE BEER SAYS AMBER ON IT (duh… haha). Otherwise here is a list of Amber Ales, and here’s a list of Amber Lagers if that helps. Either way I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon, and as always… Cheers!
