Stout Bout Homebrew Competition Revisited

Thanks to all that made the Stout Bout Homebrew Competition at Great Fermentations such an awesome time! There were 10 great beers served, several of which beat out Hoppin’ Frog’s BORIS The Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout (a 2-time gold medalist at the Great American Beer Festival that I snuck in for kicks) in our blind tasting. Our top three homebrews selected this go-round were Josh and Ashley Jenkins’ Milk Stout, Doug Dixon’s American Stout, and Michael Catlin’s Breakfast Russian Imperial Stout. Great work guys! The entries were pretty spread out (we had entries for 5 of the 6 recognized BJCP stout categories), with two Russian Imperial Stouts (one was aged for 2 years), 3 Oatmeal Stouts, 2 Milk/Sweet Stouts, a Dry Stout, and an American Stout. Thanks again to Great Fermentations for lending us their classroom, and also to cosIT Photography for the outstanding camerawork. More photos can be found in a set on cosIT’s Flicker Photostream. Cheers!

• We’ll label your entry at the start of the tasting (I’ll have plenty of sheets available when we start), but please make sure your brew is refrigerated.

White House Homebrew!

This just makes sense to me. From Anchor Brewing Company all the way to the White House, the microbrew movement is in full swing. On August 14th, Barack Obama confirmed that a small beer brewery has been added to the White House. Small batches of brew are created at this new facility for special occasions, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a steady flow of ridiculously good beer flowing through our nation’s capital. One such beer, the “White House Honey Ale” comes in both light and dark varieties, and is made with honey from the White House garden. At the moment there are no reviews on this ale, but I’d be more than willing to offer my services 🙂 Beer and American presidents have a history that goes all the way back to George Washington. In fact, Washington’s recipe was published not too long ago. This 30 gallon recipe calls for molasses instead of malted barley as the primary sugar. This technique was consistent with some English style Porters during that time period. Here are the recipes for the White House Honey Ale and Honey Porter if you are interested in brewing them yourselves. Looks like they are keeping the bittering hops a “secret.” It’s a partial mash recipe that looks pretty straight forward. Let me know if you make any!

Behind The Scenes at the Brewer’s Cup

[slideshow]

I got the opportunity to help sort out all of the entries for The Brewer’s Cup Competition today! What a great experience. I had no idea how much work went into making this event happen. Literally hundreds, if not thousands of beers were submitted to Sun King Brewery. Each entry was numbered and entered into an Excel spreadsheet to keep them all straight. The stewards had cases of beer lined up like the opening text sequence in Star Wars. As a matter of fact, the beer you see in these pictures was really just the tip of the iceberg. Judging will take place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on July 6-7, 2012. See you there 🙂

Battle of the Belgians Homebrew Competition

Battle of the Belgians has begun! BIMP’s first all homebrew blind tasting will be held at Great Fermentations on July 28th from 12pm-5pm. Here are the details. All beers need to fall within Category 16 – Belgian and French Ale BJCP Guidelines for style. The first 15 people to register their brews using the Homebrew Competition form are guaranteed a seat in the competition. 3 bombers of homebrew are required per entry. 2 bombers go towards the tasting, and one is set aside for “the pot.” Bombers will be need to be labeled (click here for label sheet), refrigerated, and brought to Great Fermentations by July 28th at 11am for checkin. What makes this event unique is that each participant is also a judge! All beers will be served randomly, and rated on a scale of 1-10. The entry with the highest average score receives a $25 gift card to Great Fermenations, a special blog post on BIMP, and takes home one of every homebrew entered. Once the tasting is over, I’ll post the list of beers in order of when they were served, each individual beer’s score, graphs, and more! Looking forward to seeing you all there. Good luck!

Upland UpCup 2012 Results

UpCup was AWESOME! I’m definitely entering again next year. There were 80+ entries in total, 12 of which were selected for best in show. The event was catered with food from the restaurant, there were multiple brewery tours with Caleb, and of course a great selection of Upland brews. Congrats to Andrew from the Foam Blowers of Indiana for a well deserved win.

War of the Wheats Update

There’s still 7 spots left in our next tasting on May 26th. If you are new to BIMP, all you need to do is Request a Brew. You can either pick from our list of suggested brews, or grab some inspiration from BeerAdvocate.com or Ratebeer.com’s Style Guide pages. Remember that each entry requires a 6 pack of the beer of your submitted choice. I’ll send you a confirmation if you get in with the address. Hope to see you soon!
