One Week Until Scottish Fest

There’s only one week left to register for our tasting next Saturday. This one is definitely one not to miss. BJCP Guidelines (Category 9 – Scottish and Irish Ales) describe Scottish Ales as primarily malty with low to moderate hop bitterness, and a low to medium body. The ABV will vary from 3-10% based on the type of ale brewed, and can vary in color from light copper to deep amber. Scottish Ales are categorized in a rather interesting way. Beers were classified by their price in schillings, with the stronger beers being more expensive (Strong Scotch Ale or “Wee Heavy” 90/-) and lighter beers being less expensive (Scottish Light 60/-). Here is a list of higher rated suggested brews that fit the style and may give you the edge to win the round:

Belhaven Wee Heavy
Belhaven 80 +/- Scottish Ale
Belhaven McCallum’s Stout Scottish Ale
Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale
Tyranena Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale
Bluegrass Brewing Co. Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale
Black Swan Scottish Ale
Sun King Wee Mac Scottish Ale
Belhaven Premium Scottish Export
Belhaven St. Andrew’s Ale

As you can see, Belhaven Brewery has numerous beers to choose from. My suggestion would be to hit up Kahn’s and see what they have available. I know for a fact that Sun King always has Wee Mac on tap if you’re into the $5 Friday scene 🙂 Looking forward to the 30th. Scottish Fest will be taking place at The Blvd Apartments. I’ll be sending formal invites with directions soon.
